2013 08 17 my first bubble net montage

This is my first bubble net. It did not end up as the finely-crafted precision bubbling device that I imagined in my mind.

I will probably add in some more strings to subdivide the over-sized cells that on the left side fo the net.

The top and side strings are 48" (120cm). I cute those strings a little longer so that they would up at 48" once the knots were tied.

The white outer strings are soda-washed Bed, Bath and Beyon cooking twine. The other strings are Classic Elite Bam-Boo. A very lightweight 100% bamboo viscose round yarn that has been discontinued, but which one can still occasionally find (at reasonable prices) on the net. While the strings are very very light, they hold a lot of juice relative to their weight.

There hasn't been enough wind yet today to try it out. It took about 90 minutes to tie.

The wind picked up in the late afternoon and mayhem ensued. My son, Jakey, who hasn't been interested in popping bubbles for about a year went crazy and invited our neighbor Dylan to join in.

It was pretty fun -- the kids went crazy.

In retrospect, the cells are larger than what I was looking for. As you can see in the video, you get masses of bubbles from tennis ball to soccer ball size.

The net which ended up being smaller than I intended because of the length lost on the sides when tying it was able to create a lot of bubbles when there were wind flurries (as you can see in the video). I will probably tie in some more strings to make the cells smaller.

With the cells this size (roughly 4 to 5 inches per size), the net might be able to use a bit more capacity. However, with the extra yarn needed to divide these into smaller cells, I don't think that I would want heavier materials. I'd rather dip the net a bit more frequently than have an excessively drippy net.

One thing that surprised me was the number of individual bubbles that were created.

Juice thoughts. This video features my standard guar juice done in a very hasty mix just a minute before we started using it. I am wondering if a PEO mix or mix with extra guar might work even better.

...(Next morning)...I am adding yarn to divide the cells. Stay tuned for a future posting...
